What does taxi insurance cover?
If you drive a taxi for public or private use, regular car insurance isn’t enough. You will need a specialist policy that covers you, your taxi, and your customers.
Taxi cover can vary depending on your business, vehicle size and operating patterns. For instance, only public hire taxi insurance will cover you to pick up customers on the street. Having the right level of taxi insurance is crucial. And you will need enough to cover you against alleged claims for injury and damage to your property.

What does taxi insurance cover?
To drive passengers for hire and reward, you need taxi insurance.
This applies to both public hire taxi drivers picking up passengers on the street, or private hire taxis picking up pre-booked fares.
There are three main types of insurance you’ll need for a taxi:
Insurance for your vehicle
Every taxi needs to be insured. The levels of insurance for your vehicle include:
- Third party only – The minimum required by law. This covers damage to other vehicles and third party liabilities in the event of an accident, but does not cover damage to your own taxi
- Third party fire and theft – The same as third party only cover, but also provides cover for fire damage to your taxi and theft of your vehicle
- Comprehensive – Adds cover for damage to your own taxi in the event of an accident

Don’t be tempted to get the cheapest taxi insurance cover without considering what you’re covered for. Third party only cover may leave you out of pocket if you have to carry out repairs to your taxi, or have it written off following an accident. Comprehensive cover is often cheaper than you think.
If your business has 3 or more taxis to insure, ChoiceQuote also offers taxi fleet insurance. This can work out cheaper and easier to manage for you, with multiple taxis and drivers all on one policy.
Public liability insurance
This provides cover for injury claims from passengers and other members of the public while you’re driving your taxi. This is included as part of your policy with most insurers, or it can be purchased separately. If in doubt, check the policy wording before buying, or get in touch with us to confirm your cover.

Taxi base insurance (taxi office insurance)
If you have an office to control your taxi bookings, taxi base insurance covers your buildings. You’ll also be able to arrange employers’ liability cover (for claims of alleged injury from staff) and public liability insurance, too.

What is public liability insurance?
When driving a taxi, members of the public can make alleged claims of injury against you.
Equally, if you have a taxi base and allow members of the public inside, they could claim against you for alleged injuries or personal damages sustained while in your premises.
Public liability insurance protects you against the cost of defending claims, and compensation for successful claims.
Cover can be provided for up to £10m. It’s often included as part of your insurance for taxi vehicles, and as part of a taxi base policy when members of the public come on-site.
Employers’ liability insurance offers the same cover, but protects you against claims from employees who work for your business.
